Wire Launches Open-Source Foundation for a Secure Collaboration Ecosystem

March 2026 – Secure collaboration expert Wire has launched its new Integrations Software Development Kit (SDK), enabling organisations to build end-to-end encrypted apps to expand functionality within Wire’s sovereign collaboration platform, powered by Messaging Layer Security (MLS).

Traditional collaboration systems don’t offer end-to-end encryption as a default mode of security, and only use encryption for data moving from user clients to their application servers. This could expose sensitive data and open the door to data breaches from cyber attacks, foreign government surveillance, and legitimate frameworks like the U.S. Cloud Act. This also applies to SaaS apps that are integrated within collaboration environments.

Designed to enable developers to create apps that integrate with Wire secure messaging teams, the Wire Integrations SDK automatically enforces end-to-end encryption for productivity, workflow, notification, employee engagement, chatbot, and AI-powered tools. This allows data exchange within Wire groups without compromising on encryption or data control.

Bridging the gap between extensibility and security, the SDK introduces a novel, self-contained environment for managing encryption, messaging and identity. The first collaboration SDK built on the IETF Messaging Layer Security (MLS) standard, it enables apps to act as full participants in secure group communication while abstracting the complexity of cryptography, allowing developers to focus on building functionality rather than security infrastructure.

The launch expands Wire’s open-source ecosystem, supporting developers in building secure, interoperable extensions to the Wire platform that adhere to organisational requirements for data sovereignty and protection. Benjamin Schilz, CEO of Wire, said: “Shielding organisational data from exposure to centralised servers is critical to improving data sovereignty and organisational resilience. With Integrations SDK, we are enabling organisations to build secure collaboration environments that meet their productivity needs while enforcing sound security, compliance, and IT governance.”

Adam Low, CTO of Wire, added: “Enterprises want to create their own apps as well as access SaaS productivity app integrations, all while maintaining the integrity of their secure communication environments. By including secure, MLS-based primitives into the development kit, we’re making it possible for any developer to create extensions where powerful end-to-end encryption is embedded from the start.”

Previously, Wire and Conceptboard, the pioneer in visual collaboration, announced a strategic partnership to deliver an integrated communication and collaboration experience supporting end-to-end security. The Conceptboard integration is being developed on the Wire Integrations SDK.

Wire currently supports over 10 million users globally across enterprise and public sector organisations. This launch follows its recent expansion into the Middle East amid rising demand for sovereign digital communication infrastructure and a digital sovereignty roundtable in Brussels with EU policymakers, industry leaders, and experts. The company’s growth reflects a broader global focus on data governance, regulation, and resilient digital infrastructure.
