In Telecoms, a Certificate Ages Faster Than the Network

Few sectors watch skills go stale as fast as telecoms. The technology underneath the industry turns over on a cycle that makes a 5-year-old certification a historical document, as each generation of network, each shift in protocol and architecture, quietly retires a chunk of what the workforce was trained on. An engineer certified as expert at the start of a network generation can be working with materially different systems by the end of it, which means the qualification on the wall is a record of what someone could once do, not reliable evidence of what they can do now.
This has always sat awkwardly with how the industry verifies skill, which leans heavily on certifications earned at a point in time and assumed to hold. The assumption was reasonable when knowledge was hard to acquire, because earning the certificate proved real effort and real understanding that took years to go out of date. AI has weakened both ends of that. The knowledge is now close to free, generated on demand, so having once studied a thing proves less than it did, and the pace of change means the half-life of that knowledge is shorter than the certificate implies.
What this leaves valuable, and more valuable than before, is current, demonstrated capability, the proof that a named engineer can do a defined task on today’s systems to a known standard, rather than the record that they passed a test on yesterday’s. For an industry where deploying the wrong skill in the wrong place is expensive and occasionally dangerous, the difference between a stale certificate and verified present capability is not academic, it is operational.
