Expert shares 10-second hack that ‘instantly’ boosts mobile signal

If you’ve ever been stuck in a busy cafe or on a train with one bar of signal, there’s a simple 10-second hack on your iPhone that could give you a stronger connection almost instantly, an expert has revealed.

UK mobile coverage is still far from perfect. According to Ofcom’s Connected Nations 2025 report, only 81 per cent of the UK landmass has 4G coverage across all four major networks, meaning huge parts of the country still get patchy reception depending on which provider you’re on. EE and Vodafone also switched off their 3G networks completely in 2025, leaving some older iPhones struggling to connect in weaker-signal areas.

Azza Kidiwala, iPhone tech expert at TechWala, has shared a simple airplane mode trick that works on every iPhone. He said: “Most people don’t realise that your iPhone doesn’t constantly search for the best signal once it’s locked onto a tower. It stays connected to the first tower it found, even if you’ve moved miles away or that tower is now overloaded. This trick forces your phone to re-scan and connect to the strongest tower available right now.”

The airplane mode signal hack explained

To do the trick on an iPhone X or newer, swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Centre. On older iPhones with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom instead. Tap the airplane icon to turn airplane mode on, wait around 10 seconds, then tap it again to turn it off. Your iPhone will then scan for the strongest available cell tower and reconnect from scratch.

Azza said: “It’s one of those tricks that sounds too simple to be true, but the science behind it is solid. When you turn airplane mode on and off, your phone has no choice but to start fresh and find the strongest tower available right now, rather than clinging to a weak one it connected to hours ago.”

When the trick won’t work

It’s worth being honest about the limitations. The airplane mode hack only works if there’s actually a better signal available somewhere nearby. If you’re in a deep rural not-spot with no cell towers in range, no amount of toggling will create signal that doesn’t exist.

Azza said: “The hack is brilliant for cities, busy commuter routes, and crowded venues where you’re often stuck on a congested tower. It’s also useful when you’ve moved between locations and your phone is still trying to use a tower miles away. But if you’re walking up Ben Nevis, no hack is going to give you 5G, you simply need a tower in range.”

For most Brits stuck in urban congestion or moving between cities, however, the 10-second airplane mode reset could be the difference between a frozen banking app and a working signal.
