Orange France’s 5G+ Rollout Promises Faster Speeds but Leaves Questions on Consumer Benefits

Orange France has launched its new 5G+ service, becoming the first provider in the country to offer free access to a Standalone 5G network. While the move represents a significant step forward in mobile technology, analysts believe that the telecom giant needs to better communicate the tangible benefits for consumers.

The Challenge of 5G Monetization

The introduction of Standalone 5G has been widely touted as the next major opportunity for revenue growth among mobile operators. However, according to Emma Mohr-McClune, Chief Analyst for Telecoms Practice at GlobalData, monetizing the new technology remains a challenge. “Wireless operators globally have struggled to turn 5G into a significant revenue driver. Many still lack strong case studies that show meaningful Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) growth,” she explained.

With the launch of 5G+, Orange France aims to offer ‘dedicated access’ in high-traffic areas, a major departure from traditional mobile networks that operate on a “best effort” basis. However, Mohr-McClune believes the company has yet to effectively educate consumers on how this enhancement will impact their everyday mobile experience.

AI Integration and Consumer Incentives

One of the most intriguing aspects of Orange France’s 5G+ rollout is its pairing with artificial intelligence services. The company is offering a free 12-month subscription to ChatGPT Plus, an AI-powered chatbot, which would otherwise cost EUR 23 per month. This move suggests a focus on leveraging improved uplink speeds—touted at a theoretical maximum of 200 Mbps—to enhance AI-driven mobile experiences.

Additionally, Orange France is targeting young professionals (ages 18 to 26) with attractive promotional incentives, including increased data security through SIM card identification data encryption. The move aligns with a broader industry trend of offering tailored packages to key demographic groups to drive adoption.

Competitors Closing In

While Orange France may be leading the charge, competition is heating up. Rival operator Free Mobile announced the launch of its Standalone 5G network last September, and Bouygues Telecom is already rolling out similar offerings for enterprise customers. This suggests that Orange France’s unique selling points may have a limited window before other providers catch up.

As the battle for 5G supremacy in France intensifies, Orange France’s success will likely depend not only on its technological advancements but also on its ability to clearly articulate the benefits of 5G+ to its customers. Without effective communication, the advantages of a dedicated bandwidth experience could go unnoticed, limiting the potential for consumer buy-in and long-term revenue gains.
